4 players who could find their futures away from White Hart Lane
With every transfer window the speculation is always as to who will be bought into a new club but with every addition there are always departures. Tottenham are always one of the more active clubs in the transfer window and with Victor Wanayama being bought in last month for £11m you would have to believe that the former Southampton midfielder won’t be the only bit of business at White Hart Lane this Summer.
As is well documented Tottenham could do with a backup Striker with AZ Alkmaar’s Vincent Jannsen looking very close to signing but be as that may solve the lack of numbers in the attacking department, let’s see what excess baggage Mauricio Pochettino could be looking to shift over the next few weeks.
With the signing of Wanayama, Mason will see his chances of game time further diminished. The 25 year old starting last season in favour and scored the goal which bought Tottenham’s first win of the season away at Sunderland but in scoring that goal he was injured. That injury saw the emergence of a certain Dele Alli to the starting eleven and it’s fair to say that Alli and Tottenham never looked back from that point onwards.
When Mason was given an opportunity to start the side was never quite the same and you could see a marked drop off in quality between Mason compared to either Alli or Mousa Dembele. It highlighted an area which could certainly do with some improvement and one that you think would be rectified with Victor Wanayama’s addition.
Mason could do a very good job for one of the sides in the bottom half of the Premier League and not forgetting he is an England international. By today’s prices something like £10m could be perceived as a very good bit of business
If Mason was a level below Alli and Dembele then Carroll was two. It was even worse when both Mason and Carroll were started as it showed what a soft underbelly Tottenham had in the middle of the park. At 24 years old Carroll is a neat and tidy player but Tottenham seem to have them in abundance
He’s by no mean a bad player but I think if Tottenham want to pushing for Champions League places again this season then this the kind player that they will need to upgrade on. Yes some players may become late bloomers but at 24 you kind of get the feeling that this ship has sailed.
I think he could do a very good job for someone in The Championship though, a loan move to Swansea in the 2014-15 season didn’t really set the world alight and a drop down a level could really show his full potential
This may be a bit of a surprise as he did go on to be pretty useful for Tottenham after Christmas especially when chipping in with goals in the 3rd and 4th Round of the F.A. Cup and away at Crystal Palace in the Premier League but he never quite got past the level of ‘Super Sub’ and even that was a short lived tag as he minutes on the pitch diminshed towards the end of the season.
Bought as one of the not so magnificent seven in the ill fated £100m Bale money splurge back in 2013 he has been a useful player due to his versatility but he seems to be the jack of all trades and master of none. He’s never quite made a first team place his own and I think Tottenham could certainly look to upgrade on Chadli to provide real competition for players such as Chrisitan Eriksen and Erik Lamela
Now that we’ve cleared the bloated midfield out there isn’t really a lot of excess fat but one player who seems surplus to requirements is Right Back DeAndre Yedlin. The American international will once again be looking at being the third choice in that position this season.
He did impress at Sunderland under Sam Allardyce and played a sizeable role in helping The Black Cats stay up, now that he is accustomed to life in the top flight maybe Pochettino will be willing to loan him out for another season to get him continued game time and reassess the situation in another 12 months.
At 22 years old there is still bags of potential to come from Yedlin so I think Tottenham would be hasty in selling him off this Summer but he will no doubt want to get back to playing each weekend and that’s an opportunity that won’t be afforded to him this season.
That concludes who Tottenham could ship out, I’ll look to do some more teams over the course of the next few days and weeks so be sure to keep an eye on the blog.
