Q&A with Newport County Community & Newport Dragons DFC Striker Luke Degilbert #4

Luke Degilbert returns for another Q&A to update us on his season with the Newport County Community side and Newport Dragons Disability.

Typically, living with autism can render it more difficult to communicate, form relationships and make sense of surroundings. However, Luke is an ambitious character and refuses to let his autism get in the way of his football dream of representing Wales.

How have you been since we last spoke? You well?

Well, I’m injured at the moment mate with hurt knee and ankle but I’m resting now for my game on 12th for Newport county community against walking football team. I’m looking forward to the game as I will be captain. It is frustrating to be injured but that’s what happens when you’re a footballer haha.

Other than that mate I’m good and I had a good week and I’m looking forward to getting back to training when I’m fit to and helping the team starting with the game on the 12th and I think it will be great fun and enjoyable to.

How was your Christmas and New Year?

It’s been very busy mate.

I had my radio show awards which was very good I got a certificate for volunteering and it was a good night and all volunteers went and it was a good night.

I went to watch Newport County against Exeter with my football team Newport County Community and it was good day out with them. Before the game me and the team had group photo with Kieran Parselle.

I have been seeing the family to over Xmas and that was nice. I had a very good Xmas and New Year cheers mate.

How are you enjoying the season so far?

I am enjoying my season so far. Happy with what I’m doing with Newport county community and Newport Dragons Disability. I have enjoyed playing under Norman Parselle, Mike and Dave Lewis and they have been a great help to me as a player.

I’m happy I was appointed captain and I’m happy with the form I’m in so far. I was gutted when I was injured as I got injured just before the last session before Christmas. I will come back stronger and help the team.

I am enjoying having interviews with other journalists to include you because you’re a top journalist.

What are your highlights from your career in 2016?

My highlights from 2016 were scoring in my first game back with Newport Dragons against Cardiff.  I received the outstanding achievement award in the end season awards and I was happy to achieve that.

My other highlights are getting into Newport county community team and being appointed captain and playing under Norman, Dave and Mike. Also playing in charity game and scored a good goal in that match.

Also I think the interviews with you and other journalists have been a highlight. I think I have enjoyed my year so far and I am really proud to achieve all these things. I’m hoping to do some coaching with Newport county community which I think will be a good experience.

What was your favourite goal you scored in 2016?

My favourite goal I have to say was the one against Cardiff has because we were 1-0 to Cardiff at the time and I equalised to make it 1-1 and it was a good goal to remember. I think the one in charity match was also very good when I skilled my coach Norman and scored past keeper.

Is there any more charity matches or tournaments planned in the near future?

There is one at end season which will be on Rodney Parade pitch on community day which be played after the Newport county vs Notts county game. I due to be captain in that game to and play upfront. It will be a good day out and I’m really looking forward to it.

I have a game next Thursday against the walking football team and there is a tournament this month.

Last talk we spoke you had started doing some radio work, how is it going?

It’s going really well cheers mate. I have been doing a local sports shows discussing Newport county and Newport Dragons Rugby also talk about my football and how I been doing. It is going really well and after Xmas I’m hoping to do live shows.

I’m hoping to do more interviews with Newport county players. I think doing more interviews will be really good for the show and I am looking forward to starting my radio shows back again.

And finally, have any scouts come to see you?

Well I’ve heard from one the Newport county players that there has been a scout from Stoke City that could possible take a look at me but I haven’t heard anything yet.

I just got to keep working hard and see what happens.

Few Questions about Newport County -

Newport County are rock bottom of League Two, How disappointed are you
with the season so far?

I am quite disappointed as a Newport fan and player for county community.

I think since Newport beat Notts County in November, the player’s heads have seemed to drop. I have been impressed with few players like Josh Sheehan, Ben Tozer, Joe Day, Tom Owen-Evans and Finley Wood been good to be honest.

I think County just have to get rid of deadwood now and bring in a few more players. At the moment it’s not looking good.

What does Graham Westley need to do to keep the club in the Football League?

He needs to get rid of players aren’t interested because it isn’t helping and there is no point keeping players if they are not interested in my opinion.

I think he needs a few new defenders get the backline sorted and get a few wins on the board.  At the moment it just isn’t working and he needs to get it sorted soon as possible.

Do you feel the new signings Aaron Williams and Jaanai Gordon will score the goals to keep County up?

Azza is a decent player came from Peterborough. He is a good goalscorer, I think he will do well at County and I think he’ll be the player County needs as he young and hungry.

He is a good lad to and he wished me good luck in my game on 12th which was nice from him.

Same with Jaanai came from West Ham, good player and I think he do well at County. I think both will help County and have a bright future ahead of them. County are interested in signing Inverness Caledonian Thistle forward Scott Boden and Craig Reid I think they will be good signings for County because they are both poachers and know where the net is.

I think they County can beat the drop if they can get them.
