Q&A with Newport County Community Striker Luke Degilbert #10
Luke Degilbert returns for another Q&A to update us on his season with the Newport County Community side.
Typically, living with autism can render it more difficult to communicate, form relationships and make sense of surroundings. However, Luke is an ambitious character and refuses to let his autism get in the way of his football dream of representing Wales.
How have you been since we last spoke? You well?
I am good thank you, just training in gym a lot and preparing for a tournament with Newport County Community and our game against Swindon game in April so all good.
Happy belated birthday, did you do anything nice?
Cheers mate, Yeah I did I went out to pub and had few drinks lol and then had football next day. I scored a hat trick and I enjoyed the football session the next day as well so it was a great birthday thank you.
I saw on Facebook, that you got gifts from some players – what did you get?
Well I got few cards from Gary Warren, Lee Minshull, Foday Nabay, Ryan Broom, Aaron Emukah and few other players. I also got card from a singer called Beth, Amy Willerton (The Model) and others.
I got a card from Jack Grealish s dad Kevin and a signed photo from Jack himself. I got a card from the Aston Villa foundation and they gave me a signed photo from Sam Johnstone, Neil Taylor, Henri Lansbury, Alan Hutton and a signed team photo with autographs on the back like the likes of robert Snodgrass Keinan Davis, Scott Hogan, Jon Kodjia, Conor Hourihane, Jack Grealish James Bree, Ahmed Elmohamady James Chester and the rest squads that was an amazing present.
I got a signed poster by all the Newport County players and a card from Newport Dragons players as well like signed by Hallam Amos, Tyler Morgan etc that was nice present to and I can’t thank them either to be honest mate
How is training going? How is the season going for the Newport County Community?
Really good thanks mate the gym work is going really well for me and I’m enjoying training with Newport County Community as well.
Everyone including myself are preparing for a tournament in few weeks in Newtown then we will be getting ready for the game at Rodney Parade against Swindon which will be exciting and a proud moment
I’m really looking forward to both events and will listen to what the coaches tell me. It is amazing playing for Newport County Community as well mate and playing under Norman Parselle and I’m enjoying my second season at the club.
Tell us about the upcoming tournament in March?
Well it is in Newtown, North Wales and it’s against teams like Cardiff City.
I’m looking forward to it and gonna do myself proud. I’m looking forward to the day and enjoy myself whether we win lose or draw.
it’s all about enjoying ourselves on the day and doing the city and club proud. I’m gonna do my best and help my team and do Newport, friends and family proud.
You also have a game with Swindon Town in April – you excited for his game?
Really excited buddy really can’t wait as a person who has been through a lot. To be playing at Rodney Parade is an amazing achievement for me and will be exciting and proud moment.
I really am looking forward to going on that pitch at half time of the Newport first team vs Swindon first team. It’s gonna be a proud moment for the team and I’m gonna do my friends, family, club and my manager Norman proud.
Is there any other charity matches or tournaments planned in the near future?
Only the one in Newtown at the moment.
I saw on Facebook at your visiting Aston Villa’s training ground shortly – you must be buzzing?
I'm going with my mate Dean to Bodymoor this month.
I am really looking forward to seeing the boys again its really nice. The fact that players likes of Keinan Davis, Alan Hutton, James Chester, Albert Adomah, Jack Grealish, Robert Snodgrass and few other boys have liked my posts on Instagram and twitter and that I’m known by them now is amazing to be honest.
They’re all top boys and the club is a really nice club. I keeps in touch with a few academy players as well and as I said there all a nice bunch of players.
Which Villa stars are you hoping to meet?
I’m looking forward to seeing the new ones to like Lewis Grabban and Axel Tuanzebe.
Also looking forward to see Johnstone, Snodgrass, Grealish, Hourihane, Neil Taylor, Birkir Bjarnason, Mark Bunn, James Bree, Scott Hogan and Davis.
On for blog, you latest piece is the anxiety by your leg operation – what inspired you to write this piece?
Well my family, friends and I kept pushing myself and it’s amazing how far I have come. I always dreamed of playing for Newport county community and I achieved that dream. I am really proud with how well I’m doing and how well I have done.
It’s nice to get support from friends and footballers as well and yourself as well
Last time we spoke, you had done amazing work volunteering and raising money for the Alzheimer Society – How is your charity work going?
It’s going really well thanks mate. There hasn’t been any events at the moment but it’s going really well thanks for asking to buddy.
And finally, have any scouts come to see you?
Not at the moment mate but I’m only thinking about enjoying myself with Newport County Community at moment and gonna keep working hard and help the team.
