Luke DeGilbert just fulfilled every football fan’s dream by pulling on the shirt of the team he supports. On September 22, Luke captained Newport County AFC in a special tournament to raise awareness of mental health issues.

The 21-year-old, who has autism, usually plays as a striker for Newport Dragons Disabilities FC.

Huge Thank you to Luke for joining us again for a Q&A.

How have you been since we last spoke? You well?

Yes, Thank you. Today I met some Man City players as they were training in Newport, even though my Premier League team is Liverpool, I still think there a good team and had pictures with John Stones, Raheem Sterling, Iheanacho, Kevin de Bruyne, Fernando, Leroy Sane, Bacary Sagna and Pablo zabelata. It was classs meeting and to have photos with them.

I am enjoying my football for Newport County Community scoring goals and enjoying my football with Newport Dragons disability. I have also been doing radio shows to and its going really well.

I am enjoying the season so far and watching Newport county and Liverpool. It’s good to see teams like Hull and Leicester doing well as well and its good see Wales doing well to.

How is training going?

Training for both my teams Newport County and Newport dragons are going wicked. I have scored 22 goals for Newport county community so far and we have games lined up against Wrexham, Merthyr and few other teams. I have a tournament with Newport dragons disability coming up to and our training be getting filmed Sunday.

I am really enjoying my football and doing well for both teams. Me and my team mates for both teams are training really hard for our upcoming games.

Tell us more about the charity game?

The game finished 9-8, it was a charity game was between Newport County Yellows and Ambers who I captained and the other team was Newport County Reds.

It was a great and proud moment to be named captain for this game and I scored 4 goals and an assist.

The game was filmed and will be on the FAW YouTube channel. Newport County left back Dan Butler watched the match and the club mascot Spitty the Dog played to. It was a great game of football for mental health and the tournament I got for Newport dragons disability next month which will be in Newport will teams like Cardiff, Swansea and US Tigers.

We were raising money for Mental Health which helps people with mental health problems and we have another game planned at the end if tye season which will be on the Rodney Parade Pitch. It was a really good day and it was a fun match to play in.

Can you talk through your 4 goals and which one was your favourite goal?

I scored 2 were shots, The 3rd goal was an volley and the 4th one came when I skilled this player from the other team then hit it into top corner. I made a good assist to it was a great moment and everyone enjoyed it. Everyone are looking forward to seeing the game from Thursday on the FAW YouTube channel and I'm looking forward to seeing my 4 goals and everyone else goals. Like I said it was a great game of football and everyone scored good goals.

My favourite goal was my 4th goal where I skilled the player and hit it into far corner.

You recent done some radio work, how did it go?

It’s going great thanks, I’m really enjoy doing it and I got another one Sunday. I do a sports show, i have been doing match reports and its really good to be doing radio work. I've recorded one about the charity game and it be really good doing a report on the match..

Are there any more tournaments this season?

There is one in Newport next month on 9th October. I’m looking forward to it then there be few other tournaments as well and maybe few games. We are all training well for it next month and I am working hard in training ready for it. I might be possibly playing striker or defence in tournament as I can play both positions now and do well in both positions.

Everyone is looking forward to the festival tournament and we can’t wait for it. I am looking forward to the season, going to try and win as many games as we can and I’m going to try score as many goals for team as I can and do well for team.
