The 72 Show - Brighton Are Finally Up!
Richard ‘Hero’ Hudson is joined by Nick Davie and Shane Lees
After a number of years of being the bridesmaid they’re finally going to the Premier League, Nick…Brighton are going up. What for you has been the contributing factors to their success this season? When you look back on Brighton only 20 years ago they were almost relegated from the Football League as well as being very close to liquidation and having to play their home games at Gillingham, flash forward to now and you have a fantastic stadium, one of the best training centres in the country and the future is looking brighter than a day on the beach there in August, can they solidify their place next season in the Premier League?
Newcastle look nailed on for 2nd spot and a quick return, prior to the season starting most people would have bet their house on Newcastle finishing run away Champions so will they look back upon this season with a slight touch of disappointment or consider it main job achieved and look ahead to next season? In the Play-offs it’s looking likely for Reading & Huddersfield and then 2 from Sheff Wednesday, Fulham and Leeds, who’s your four to go through and your eventual winners?
At the foot of the table Rotherham have been dead in the water since time began and Wigan now need a miracle, with them though could see one of two former league champions drop into League One as Blackburn & Forest both are precariously hanging on to their Championship status, what has gone wrong with these two clubs?
Moving onto League One now and Sheffield Utd have finally achieved promotion back up to the Championship after several years of being nearly men. Since the start of 2015-16 Chris Wilder has a record of played 89, won 56, drawn 22 and lost 11, despite him being a boyhood Blades fan, ball boy and former player will he be a manager that will be on a few bigger clubs shopping lists this summer? Over the past few seasons it’s been a pretty grim time to be a football fan in Yorkshire, this season though has seen a huge reversal of fortunes with varying levels of success for Huddersfield, Leeds, both Sheffield clubs, Bradford & Doncaster. Is there something brewing in the waters for the clubs over t’hills?
Lastly I wished to discuss the drop from the football league to the conference and it brings me to a quote from the late great Mancunian Anthony H Wilson… As a youth, fans believe the centre forward is the most important person at their club. As they mature, they come to appreciate it’s the manager that counts. But it is only when they reach the wisdom of middle age that they come to accept the truth, by far the most significant figure is the chairman. In Francesco Becchetti Leyton Orient have an owner who has destroyed their once proud club both off and on the field, this weekend shall probably see them relegated from the league and on the 12th of June Becchetti has to pay off debts of £5.5m or sell the club as a winding up order looms once again, to what level do the FA have to take some form of responsibility for failing to recognise chairman such as Becchetti when they run the ‘Fit and Proper Person Test’? Well that’s the end of this episode of the 72 show,
