The 72 Show - Episode 2.13 (with Jason Jarrett)
Anthony Kendrick and Nick Davie are joined by Jason Jarrett, a former football league midfielder. Jarrett played for a number of clubs, beginning his career at Blackpool before joining Bury, Wigan, Preston and a number of other clubs before finishing his career at Salford City working with the Class of 92.
We discuss his playing career, and how homesickness affected him joining Norwich and playing for hometown club Bury and how things ended at Salford City. We then move on and talk about life after football, where he works with Gareth Seddon at DRN Sports alongside his other charity work. Jarrett is also a Level 4 referee, so we get his thoughts on the top referees, before the tables are turned with a question for us!
We then move on to discuss the ties in the FA Cup, with stories including the lowest ranked side in the competition Stourbridge losing to Wycombe Wanderers, Lincoln City and Sutton United earning replays against Football League opposition. The biggest stories came from Millwall, who beat Premier League side Bournemouth 3-0 and Plymouth going to Anfield and earning a replay courtesy of a goalless draw.
This round saw sides making big changes, Liverpool put out their youngest ever side, and 11 changes for Bournemouth. It wasn't just the Premier League sides, with comments from Neil Warnock that he struggled to get out of bed for the game and making changes. Does this kind of attitude take the shine away from the FA Cup? We also discuss the attendances, with both good stories and the bad. There were some impressive away followings, including 9,000 Plymouth fans making the trip to Liverpool, and 5,000 Lincoln City fans at Ipswich. But there were some disappointing attendances, including 6608 at Hull to watch their game against Swansea and QPR vs Blackburn attracting just 7,482 fans.
We finish the show by discussing the fourth round draw. The biggest ties are Middlesbrough vs Accrington, Derby County vs Leicester and Man Utd vs Wigan. We may see a couple more non-league sides in the next round, but we'll have to wait and see what happens in the replays.
Apologies for not discussing the numerous football league stories - we will return for The 72 Show next week when these will all be discussed.
Thank you for listening and to Jason Jarrett for his time in joining us with the show.
