The 72 Show - Episode 2.26
Anthony Kendrick and Nick Davie preview the final week of the football league action, as well as review the final League One table.
We begin the show by discussing the ongoing race between Brighton and Newcastle. With both now promoted, who will top the league, and does it matter? Brighton remain top after losing their last two games but Newcastle have beaten Preston and Cardiff to move a point behind. The play-off race is over, unless we see a 13 goal swing with Leeds only drawing against Norwich. They came back from 3-0 down, but with Fulham drawing, they have effectively secured 6th place.
League One's season has concluded with Sheffield United finishing the season on 100 points, and they will be joined in the Championship by Bolton who won on the final day to secure their place. Fleetwood will have to settle for the playoffs, where they are joined by Scunthorpe, Bradord and Millwall. The final play-off spot was secured following in dramatic fashion, with Shaun Hutchinson scoring a late winner. At the bottom of the table, Port Vale join Swindon, Coventry and Chesterfield in the relegation zone after failing to win their final game of the season. What does the future hold for them with Michael Brown in charge?
In League Two, the final games are to be played this weekend. The top three are all confirmed in Plymouth, Doncaster and Portsmouth, but the champions are not. Luton and Exeter have secured 4th and 5th places, but the final play-off places are up for grabs with anyone up to 12th-placed Mansfield mathematically able to get into the play-off spots currently held by Carlisle and Blackpool. We also discuss the final game between Blackpool and Leyton Orient, which has seen the EFL intervene in the ticket sales. Finally, we discuss whether Newport or Hartlepool will be the ones to join Leyton Orient in the National League next year.
